Online Printing and Design Business: Painting on Anything

"Everyone is gifted - but some people never open their package"

Be it hunting a unique gift for that special person, a token of recognition for your employees to celebrate their performance, expressing your support for a cause, or just a wearing a couple of lines on your t-shirt to show your attitude, it proves more complex than solving a Rubik's cube.

Well, not anymore. At Myntra they are here to simplify this cumbersome task into a couple of easy steps. Founded in July 2006, Myntra happens to be the brain wave of 6 guys from IIT/IIM background. It's an online platform where one can create or buy customized and personalized merchandize such as t-shirts, mugs, calendars, watches, notepads, and so on.

Mr. Mukesh Bansal, founder Myntra prints got the idea of printing just about anything on T-shirt, a coffee mug, a block of wood, glass or even a wall while he was working in US. After completing his B Tech in computer science from IIT Kanpur, he worked with a number of ocmpanies in the Silicon Valley before returning to India in 2006. Along with former IIT batchmates Ashutosh Lawania and Vineet Saxena, he began to think on customisation and personalisation in the design space as areas that would allow for self-expression for everyone, from individuals to corporates.

Initial investments were made by Bansal from the money that he saved while working in US for six years along with his partners. The investment made by IDG Ventures, NEA & Accel Partners helped Myntra to increase its employee strength which was not an easy task as attrition levels were pretty high at that point.

The bulk of Myntra’s business — around 65%—comes from corporate clients like ABB, Infosys, Verizon and Yahoo. A key challenge initially was to convince large corporates that Myntra’s offerings could take corporate gifting to a new level, something the small unorganised providers couldn’t possibly provide.

Their philosophy is to retain their clients and get repeat business. With over 400 customers now, the company has ensured that it has a dominant position in its market. Creating concepts into design takes a lot of creativity and efforts to execute. This has meant building a team of designers who work from the company’s Bangalore office housed in a three-storey building. Myntra has developed technology to put designs even on surfaces like wall tiles and concrete.

Flush with investments and high margins the company is on track to hit the million dollar revenue mark by this year end. Next year, the company aims to grow threefold to $3 million. The employees will also grow to about 150 in a couple of years. Myntra has tied up with Reebok and Nike for IPL customised T-shirts and is in talks with a retailer to set up physical stores to address the consumer segment.

They plan to open 15 stores by the year end. They are now giving a push to the B2C business. Along the way, they have got calls from people who want them to re-design a car or create a James Bond sports vehicle. Another one called to customise his house from the outside. A company wanted them to create a painting on a large canvas. Howver, more and more people now know what exactly they do, and the good part is, they know they can deliver as well.

With fast developments in technology and innovations taking place everyday, people hardly take time in discarding old electronic products and gadgets. Be it cell phones, laptops, desktops or anyother electronic item, their life span has shorten drastically and they are discarded pretty soon. So the milion dollar question that comes to my mind is where do these millions of computers, mobile phones and electronic items go, after been discarded.

It comes to this Hi-Tech junkyard based at Roorkee in India. In a country like India where recycling waste is totally an unorganised sector, Rohan Gupta saw a huge opprtunity in organising this activity.

Attero Recycling was founded by Rohan Gupta and Nitin Gupta in the year 2007 with an objective of providing an environmentally friendly solution to the problem of e-waste. Attero Recycling, an integrated end-to-end electronic waste (e-waste) recycling company. At Attero, they look at e-waste not just as waste, but as an important resource that can be made useful instead of shunning it as a social and environmental burden. With their fully automated facility for e-waste recycling at Roorkee, a first of its kind metallurgical process and a close technical collaboration with a leading US company, they have not only handled the complete processing of waste but also provided client friendly solutions like pickup of e-waste from the premises and complete data security.

Their project has been funded by VC firms, NEA-Indo US Venture and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. They have developed the technology for recycling non-reusable plastic as well as their own metallurgical process. Attero conducts regular audits to ensure compliance with the Health Environment and Safety standards. They believe that every contribution can make a difference in reducing the e-burden on society and protect nature from the growing E-Waste menace.

Attero’s plant is equipped to extract 98% of materials such as copper, lead, nickel, zinc, plastic, iron, silver and even gold to an extent. Attero has tied up with LG for a mobile ‘takeback’ campaign with drop boxes at 50 LG centres. The company has collected 300-400 tonnes of e-waste and plans to do about 1,000 tonnes a month initially and reach 3,000 tonnes a month in the next 4-5 years. It has also tied up with corporates such as LG, Perot Systems, KPMG, Visa and Tata DIESL to collect e-waste and in turn plants saplings for free within their campuses for each computer they pick up.

Founders of Attero:

Nitin Gupta graduated with an MBA degree from NYU Stern School of Business and a B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Rohan Gupta was the co-founder and COO at Cinesprite Pvt. Ltd (a leader in online movie entertainment in India). He has previously worked at blue chip companies like SAP Labs. Rohan graduated with a B.E degree in Chemical engineering from REC Jaipur and is a man with innovative and intelligent strategies, which have the potential to take Attero to newer heights.

Performance Consulting: Next Gen Training

- What are the steps involved in identifying the training needs of an individual?
- How do you plan for the training programs of employees?

Sometimes a training solution is selected because the organization requires it, while at other times it is chosen because we naively believe that training alone will solve the problem. Whatever the reasons, each of the results is the same. Investments in organizational training and development is wasted because most of the knowledge and skill aimed in training is not fully applied by those employees on the job and to utter surprise not more than 10% of this expenditure actually is transferred to the job. What do we conclude from this is that the traditional training approach do not work anymore nowadays.

The traditional training problem confuses training activities with performance improvement and it does not addresses the transfer of the newly learnt skills and knowledge onto the job. It is however, not an unknown concept of making the transition from a training approach to a performance approach. The reason of existing performance problem does not lie in the lack of skills and adequate knowledge. As a Human Resource Professional one must focus on what people are expected to learn. One should follow a structured approach in analyzing performance problems and that the trainers differentiate between skill and knowledge deficiencies and other work environment factors that truly affect job performances.

Tom Gilbert is a believer of the fact that performance analysis should be based upon rigorous examination of an exemplary performance. He has advised that it is not enough to ask exemplary performers on what they do: instead the analysis must be done on their performances. Gilbert in his book ‘Human Competence: Engineering Worthy Performance’ presents a model for engineering human competence for finding out why the same is lacking and how to get more out of it.

In today’s right sized, delayed and re-engineered organizations, people are being asked to do more work which also keeps on changing. On account of this changing work the same results into fewer repetitive tasks with greater problem solving.

The futuristic work force must be able to:
  • Develop collaborative working relationship with key managers and other partners.
  • Clearly understand the vision and the strategies that the organization is striving to achieve
  • Identify the performance required from employees if the organization is to thrive
  • Determine the condition in a work environment that must be modified if the needed performance us to take root
  • Work with people in and out of the organization to determine all the interventions required if high performance is to be achieved.

Keeping in view these changes, it is desirable that the role of a trainer should be transformed to the role of a performance consultant. Since long, the training profession has been focussed on the activities of training people in the profession who have thought of themselves as specialists and assoicated with the course, delivering the program or identifying the training needs. these focusses will no longer suffice in today’s business environment. In the changing scenario, and looking at the intense-competition, this is high time that we shifted our focus from what people need to learn (training) to what they must do (performance).
